University of Chester and Storyhouse officially bolster partnership |
The University and Storyhouse, the independent arts centre and creative hub in Chester, have signed a six-year partnership agreement, starting from the beginning of September.
Building on their existing work together, the agreement sets out the framework within which the University and Storyhouse will jointly host, present and sponsor events, and collaborate on research and creative projects. Initiatives already linking the University and Storyhouse have included delivering the Chester International Film Festival with Chester Film Society, and Storyhouse is one of the host venues for the University-led Festival of Ideas.

Kind benefactor donates Victorian editions of University publication previously thought to be lost |
Going back to the days when the University was the Chester Diocesan Training College in the Victorian era, its students produced a magazine called The Collegian, which first appeared in 1886. The 1886 and 1887 issues were long considered to be lost, until bookseller Dr Chris Robinson, of Creaking Shelves Books, came into possession of them. He has kindly donated them to the University archive.
Intriguingly, the early issues of the magazine appeared in handwritten, rather than print format. Print historian Dr Lisa Peters commented that manuscript periodicals were unusual in late Victorian times, as printing was widespread.
Not only would there have been many printers in Chester who could have typeset and printed a magazine, but many institutions had their own simple hand-operated printing press which would allow them to print notices, advertising and small magazines.

Hospice of the Good Shepherd provides its services free of charge to its patients and costs £5.2million to run each year with just 17% of the funding coming from statutory sources. The remaining 83% is raised from a range of fundraising activities and the support of the generous local community in Cheshire.

Sustainability tip of the month: Ditch the disposable for reusable |
Having a picnic, a BBQ or garden party? Ditching disposables for reusable crockery can be a game changer in reducing waste. Using a refillable water bottle can be the best way to stay hydrated, and investing in a cool box makes it easier to keep food fresh and avoid extra packaging.
